Auditions for Premiere of: No Good Things Dwell in the Flesh
By Christina Masciotti
Director: Alice Reagan

Janice (30) has the edge and street smarts that come with having grown up in Queens. She’s equipped with a rare combination of business-minded acumen, creative talent, and customer service prowess. However, her wide-ranging skill sets seem to pull her in different directions rather than integrate into a satisfying whole. As a result, she’s prone to distraction, restlessness and anxiety, often second-guessing her choices.  She’s searching for her niche in life, and just when she thinks she’s found it, it seems to slip out of reach again.

Agata (64) Russian master tailor, former civil engineer, brutally displaced by the collapse of the USSR. She is now the sole proprietor of a successful tailor shop in Queens which she built independently, from scratch. She has an uncanny ability to look at bodies as a form, instantaneously breaking down proportions, somehow knowing what will look attractive. Though modest, her spirit and wit are indomitable. Speaks with a Russian accent (Latvian in origin).

Vlad (55) Romanian-born, raised in Venezuela, has worked as a spy and has a tendency towards unhealthy obsessions. Independently wealthy, he currently is not working for mental health reasons. Speaks with a Romanian accent.

Part of the Celebration of Women in the Arts

Set in a tailor shop in Queens, NO GOOD THINGS DWELL IN THE FLESH is a new play about a Russian master tailor whose skill and perfectionism have amassed a clientele she can no longer sustain on her own. She enlists the help of a protégé who is talented, but also conflicted about putting her personal ambition ahead of settling down to start a family. The tailor staggers through this uncertainty, embellishing her sewing lessons with political conviction, striving to not only pass on a dying art, but also ensure the next generation is not as hampered by oppressive cultural expectations as she was. The re-emergence of her own deranged, former suitor further threatens her plans and forces her to confront the kinds of limits she’s faced her entire life and shrewdly turned to her advantage by sheer strength of will.
